What is the grammage of fabrics?, whether for motorcycling, outdoor or any other activity
The grammage of the fabrics is the weight per square metre of fabric, this is reflected in the thickness, the number of threads, the weft and the warp (set of threads placed in parallel and along the length of the fabric).
Diagram of warp and weft in fabrics:
The grammage of motorbike clothing directly influences the quality, hardness, resistance, wear, thermal protection and elasticity of the clothing.
For sports garments such as Cycling, Outdoor, Snow or Running, which require a very high percentage of perspiration and little thermal protection, due to the fact that the activity for which they are intended is of high physical intensity and the body itself generates heat and the body temperature increases, it is recommended for this type of garment a minimum weight of 100gr/m2 to 180gr/m2, +-20gr/m2.
For thermal clothing intended for use in a low-intensity physical activity with minimal movement, such as motorcycling, minimum weights of 220gr/m2 and above are recommended.
Below, we show how the process of obtaining the grammage data of a fabric is carried out.
We were evaluating many parameters for how the final product of Arc'Warm should be, and we took the decision to reach a grammage in our thermal clothing of 285gr/m2 in our thermal clothing for motorbikes as a minimum. Differentiating with higher weights including the internal areas of the body with the most sensitive parts such as the neck of the rider, adding or double weight of 285gr/m2 + 285gr/m2 in the neck, and Merino wool fabric 285gr/m2 + windproof fabric on the front.
Our most complete product for the motorcyclist, our ArcticStorm M-Wool T-Shirt, combines all technologies in one product. We can encompass it in our product with the most thermal and weather protection for your motorbike rides.
The front, where our vital organs must be protected to the maximum, has a layer of Merino Wool and we add our windproof and waterproof WindStormProof membrane with the maximum breathability, 0,5 R.E.T. (more info about our membrane WindStormProof here), you can see more information about this magnificent garment in the following link:

We could have put more grammage and reach higher values, but it would penalise a lot when the temperature rises a little being a product that would only serve for extreme temperatures and nothing else, with less elasticity and less comfort; therefore, after much debate, we came to the conclusion to use the above parameters for our fabrics and how to use them, looking for maximum thermal comfort in any situation in your motorbike trips.
